Best of the Web 4/27/07, Roger Ebert not looking so good |

Roger Ebert made his first public appearance in quite awhile for his annual overlooked film festival. Unfortunately after numerous surgeries because of cancer, he didn’t look so good.
Kudos to him for showing up. He may not look great, but it took a lot of courage to make an appearance when you look that beat up.
On a side note, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Mr. Ebert; it was his show, plus his Great Movies articles that inspired my love for great cinema…

I’m a little worried that the new Harry Potter movie might suck because the director, David Yates, isn’t the most experienced or accomplished director.
That being, the trailer to the new movie looks amazing. Be sure to check it out.

As many of you know, I love David Hasselhoff.I’m not sure if it’s the white man’s afro, the amazing singing voice or just the overall talented package that is the Hoff. But whatever it is, I must say we’re truly lucky to live in a time when a musical genius like Mr. Hasselhoff is alive.
Anyway, uber.com created a their own tribute to the Hoff. Enjoy it:

Best of the Web 4/18/07, Cho Seung-Hui |
| April 18th, 2007 under best of the web, virginia tech shooting. [ Comments: none ]

The disturbing picture above came from a package Cho Seung-Hui, the Virgina Tech killer, sent to NBC News between his two attacks. The package apparently contains a “disturbing, rambling multi-page statement,” along with a video and photos.
Clearly Cho was a sick individual. Everyone from his professors & fellow students to his parents thought so.
General District Court records even show that a Montgomery County magistrate ordered Cho, 23, to undergo a mental evaluation in December 2005. The magistrate found probable cause that Mr. Cho was “mentally ill” and an “imminent danger to self and others” or is so seriously mentally ill as to be substantially unable to care for himself.
Should anything have been done to stop him? Could anything have been done? There will be a lot of blame being thrown in the coming days; parents, professors, courts, music, movies and whole lot of other reasons will be criticized for causing and not preventing this tragedy.
But once the story cools, and the politicians and media stops their tales full of sound and fury, signifying nothing, all that will be left is suffering of hundreds people who lost someone they loved.
So please, ignore the media’s sensationalism and the bullshit politics from the left and the right; it’s worthless and downright exploitative.

Virginia Tech Shootings kills at least 33 |
| April 16th, 2007 under essay, religion, opinion, virginia tech shooting. [ Comments: none ]

|
At least 33 people were killed today on the campus of Virginia Tech in what appears to be the deadliest shooting rampage in American history, according to the New York Times.
There are very few things I can write that won’t sound trite or like a cliché about today’s events. It’s obviously a horrific tragedy. And it’s easy to feel about nihilistic about the whole thing, another check point for the random, terrifying chaos that is life. After all, what possible explanation could a compassionate God for such random tragedy?
Religious types will try and comfort you with phrases like “we don’t know God’s plan for us.” Personally I find such explanations an awful answer to explain the pain and suffering for those who don’t deserve it. Does that mean God took from this earth for his own reasons and let the families suffer as a result? The only answer that makes any sense to me is: we don’t know why they had to suffer and die. Like so many things, it’s a mystery. But one thing is for certain: the very religious are guessing (or hoping) just like the rest of us.
All we can really do or so in the end is honor & respect the lives that have been lost; feel compassion for those who lost loved ones; be thankful that you and the ones you love are still alive; and if you feel the need to, pray.

Best of the Web 4/15/07, Top ten worst celebrity boob jobs |

Boob jobs are a dime a dozen in Hollywood: everyone has them.
The real question for me though is what’s the point? Does it really make a woman look better? Is a boob job of D cups that much more attractive than a perfect B cup?
In most cases, I think it’s a no. Case in point: check out this list of the top ten worst celebrity boob jobs. Then tell me that Victoria Beckham, Lindsay Lohan or Tara Reid look better with their new boobs…

Best of the Web 4/13/07, Kurt Vonnegut is dead |

One of the great satirist’s of the 20th century, Kurt Vonnegut died Wednesday night at the age 84. So it goes.
When I was younger Vonnegut was one of my favorites. His work opened me up to a new world, a world where you could discuss important, serious topics like nuclear weapons (i.e. Cat’s Cradle) and war (i.e. Slaughterhouse Five) with humor.
My love his of work became admiration as I grew older, as I sought writers with more complexity in style. But like that first time with your first girlfriend, Vonnegut’s work always had a soft spot in my heart.
He leaves a body of work that belongs in the same breath as Jonathan Swift and Mark Twain. But, of course, those are topics for English Professors, not most of us. He’s gone now. Let’s celebrate his work and mourn his death.
