Howard Stern trying to destroy American Idol
April 1st, 2007 essay, opinion, american idol

Since his move to satellite radio, Howard Stern, the self-proclaimed king of all media, has become irrelevant. He has fewer listeners because his subscribers have to pay to listen him; and his show has become so raunchy because he has no FCC restrictions that he has lost touch with mainstream adolescent boys that used to be his core.

Well Mr. Stern may have found a way to become relevant again. He’s started a campaign to bring down the most watched show on television, American Idol, by promoting contestant Sanjaya Malakar, a god awful singer and performer, who with the help of Mr. Stern and his fans hasn’t been eliminated yet.

Personally I applaud Mr. Stern’s efforts, and it’s not because I’m a bitter, elitist who hates everything that’s popular (although that’s true, too.) It’s because American Idol sucks!

Yes, there have been some very talented performers over the years– the amazing Jennifer Hudson comes to mind– but this moronic show promotes a whole culture of turning talented people into moronic, prepackaged pop stars, so they can have a bunch of 13-year old little girls as fans. They become record company tools to sell millions of records, have a few hit and make a lot of money for themselves, just like the Britney’s, Jessica’s and Kelly Clarkson’s of the world.

I know many of you will argue that Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks have won, that proves you’re wrong, that it’s not about making pop stars, it’s about the music. But that’s not really my point at all… it’s that authenticity in pop culture is very hard to find these days, mainly because ratings and selling records are valued above all else, and American Idol is one of the main culprits. Gone are the days when a young man an awful and an acoustic guitar could sound like most authentic thing you’ve ever here.

So if anyone agrees with me, I urge you please: vote for the worst.

It is the mark of an inferior person to try to make him/herself seem superior by destroying something or someone else. You hit that nail on the head in your opinion. Maybe America could vote at Sirius radio to send Mr Howard home. Has Herr Stern any consideration for the damage he is causing to the other contestants or that, just maybe, new talent will arise from American Idol? America has voted and they selected American Idol, not Howard Stern and his fellow travelers.
