Best of the Web 6/22/07, Firefighters inhaled as ton of pot burned
June 22nd, 2007 under best of the web. [ Comments: none ]

I had a good laugh about this story:

EDINBURG, Texas (AP) — Firefighters who spent half an hour fighting a blaze in which 2,000 pounds of marijuana went up in smoke breathed so much of it that they would have failed a drug test, a fire chief said.

It took more than 35 firefighters, 1,000 gallons of water and five gallons of chemical suppressant to extinguish the warehouse blaze on Wednesday, Fire Chief Shawn Snider said.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were investigating the origin of the drugs.

The Hidalgo County fire marshal was investigating whether arson was the cause.

Snider said Thursday the firefighters were exposed to so much marijuana smoke that they would not be able to pass a drug test, despite wearing air packs to prevent them from inhaling toxic or hazardous fumes.

Wow, that’s some sweet gig those firefighters have. Not only are they doing a civic duty beyond reproach, but they’re getting high while doing it.

We should all be so lucky.

Anyone who has a blog, like myself, are usually full integrated into Web 2.0. We use wikipedia constantly, we find videos not only on YouTube, but iFilm, Daily Motion and Metacafe. We look up pictures on flickr…

But we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg with the internet. Imagine what we’ll see in the next 20 years…

The Sopranos Finale… What the hell was that?
June 12th, 2007 under opinion, the sopranos. [ Comments: 2 ]

For a show that was talked about being maybe the greatest series in the history of television, The Sopranos ended with a whimper on Sunday night.

Instead of drama and intrigue, we, the audience, got dead air.

Instead of closure for the series, the audience got an open-ended ending that left us scrambling for the cable box.

Instead of a great ending, the audience got a gimmicky one.

For those who don’t know, the Sopranos ended with the immediate family sitting down for dinner at a dner. Meadow Soprano, running a little late because she can’t parallel park, runs into the restaurant to meet the rest of her family, and the camera cuts to Tony. Then nothing. A blank screen for 10 seconds. Then the closing credits appear without music.

The group I watched it with thought their DVR had malfunctioned and scrambled to find out what was wrong. We rewinded it and watched it again. And again. Turns out nothing was wrong except what David Chase calls an ending.

There’s a theory that makes the ending more palatable. It says:

“I am surprised to see that more people didn’t come to the same conclusion I came to watching the final episode of The Sopranos — Tony is dead. That’s why there was a sharp cut at the end. There wasn’t a fade to black, the music stopped, the pictures stopped, there was an instant sharp exit. That’s how you die when you get shot in the back of the head.”

This makes more some sense but still feels like a cop out. David Chase might have been “true” to his vision with this ending, but to me the Sopranos feels unfinished.

Best of the Web 6/10/07, Paris Hilton

paris-hilton-crying.jpg

Like most of you, I think Paris Hilton’s a moron, a creation of the media and our celebrity culture who has no reason to be famous.Like most of you, I felt there was no good reason for her being released from jail and felt it was part of the double standard of society where celebrities were held above the law… but I didn’t care enough to actually complain.

And like most of you, I was glad to hear she was going back.

But I got to say, I felt bad when I saw the picture above.

The odd thing about the picture, is that it may well end up being the next Kim Phuc or Elian Gonzalez type picture– the winner of the most iconic picture of the year.

Isn’t that a sad commentary of the media culture we live in?

Best of the Web 6/7/07, Top 10 In Living Color Musician Spoofs
June 7th, 2007 under best of the web, in living color. [ Comments: none ]

There was a time in the 1990’s when In Living Color was maybe the funniest show on television. This was due in part to its parodies of musical acts. (I still remember the Vanilla Ice parody and laugh with glee.)

So in honor, here’s a list of In Living Color’s top 10 musical spoofs. It’s a great list.
