The $225,000 Parking Space
July 14th, 2007 new york times, opinion, capitalism

Manhattan is a terrible, overpriced yuppie haven.

I can say this because I live in Brooklyn of course. (Us Brooklynites are growing ever resentful of the millionaire playground Manhattan has become.)

Case in point:

“Spaces are in such demand that there are waiting lists of buyers. Eight people are hoping for the chance to buy one of five private parking spaces for $225,000 in the basement of 246 West 17th Street, a 34-unit condo development scheduled for completion next January. The developer, meanwhile, is seeking city approval to add four more spots. “

That’s right: $225,000 for a fucking parking space. It’s a symbol of what’s wrong with unbridled capitalism where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Where the rich can spend a quarter million dollars to buy a parking space, while 200 blocks uptown many people won’t see a quarter million dollars in 5 years for their entire families.

Call me a commie or socialist if you must… but this kind of luxury spending pisses me off.
